Why did you say, “I didn’t read the article on purpose”

LG Twins rookie outfielder Kim Hyun-jong's position on the team has changed significantly in just over a month.

When leaving for spring camp in the United States at the end of January, Kim Hyun-jong was listed in the first team camp as a promising rookie, and returned home on the 4th, attracting attention as the hottest player in LG camp.

Director Yeom Kyeong-yeop interviewed reporters at Incheon Airport on the 4th and said, “When (Kim) Hyun-jong first came to camp, I had the feeling that he was a rookie. “If I do well, I will have to cover a lot of basics this year. I thought I would be a good resource when I come to next year’s camp, but I absorbed it very quickly and grew,” he praised.

Kim Hyun-jong caught Coach Yeom's attention by showing off 8 hits in 14 at-bats and a batting average of .571 in 4 practice games against Blue and White held at spring camp.

1 hit in 2 at bats (3 doubles) in the first Blue and White match, 2 hits and 1 home run in 4 at bats in a practice game against NC on the 26th of last month, 2 hits in 3 at bats (1 triple) in the second Blue and White match on the 29th, and 2 hits against NC on the 1st. In the first practice game, he had 3 hits in 5 at-bats. Although it was only a camp practice game, he hit a hit in all four games and also showed off his slugging ability, including one home run and two triples.

He also succeeded in stealing three bases in two practice games against NC. He showed a balanced range of abilities including contact ability, slugging ability, and mobility. There were some minor mistakes in defense. Coach Yeom showed his intention to give Kim Hyeon-jong many opportunities in the exhibition game, and mentioned competition with Song Chan-eui for the outfield backup position.

Kim Hyun-jong was unusually calm and restless for his young age. In an interview upon his return home, he said, “I deliberately did not read the article,” and was worried that he would become lazy the moment his heart sank. He maintained his original focus, emphasizing more what he lacked than what he did well. The following is a Q&A.

-He is a hot star at LG and Arizona camp.

no.

-How do you feel about finishing the camp well and receiving attention?

A lot of my coaches, older brothers, and seniors told me that an article had been published, but I deliberately didn't pay attention to it. I think I just kept doing it the same way until the end, just like I said, 'Let's do it in the beginning.'

-It was your first spring camp. How did it compare to your expectations?

It was a lot different than I thought... The seniors were much better than I thought, and the atmosphere seemed difficult, but the seniors helped me adapt well and made training really fun. Also, I saw the seniors doing a lot of personal training, and it was a spring camp that gave me a lot of experience.

-When I left the country, I said I wanted to learn a lot because there were so many outstanding seniors in the outfield. Did you learn a lot?

First of all, I asked senior Park Hae-min a lot about defense, and he really taught me a lot. I asked a lot of questions because it seemed like it wasn't easy to judge batted balls compared to when I was in high school. Senior Park Hae-min said, ‘If you want to ask anything, ask it at any time,’ so I asked a lot and gave a lot of information.

-What else did you learn about batted ball judgment?

Senior Park Hae-min said that defense is completely different from when he was in high school, so he seems to have learned everything from scratch. (Because professional players hit different balls).
