‘Suspicion of kickbacks from sponsorship company’
Former KIA Tigers coach Kim Jong-guk, who was a current professional baseball coach, is being investigated for detention in connection with personal corruption. The arrest of former coach Kim and former KIA general manager Jang Jeon-seok will be decided on the 30th at the earliest.
At 10:30 a.m. on the 30th, Seoul Central District Court Chief Judge Yoo Chang-hoon, in charge of warrants, will interrogate the suspects (warrant review) before the arrest of former coach Kim Jong-guk and former general manager Jang Jeong-seok, who are suspected of breach of trust, etc., and consider the necessity of their arrest.
It was belatedly revealed that the prosecution requested arrest warrants for former coach Kim Jong-guk and former general manager Jang Jeong-seok on the 24th.
Breach of trust is a crime that applies when a person receives an unfair request for work and takes a financial advantage.
This incident was triggered by suspicions that former general manager Jang demanded kickbacks while coordinating free agent (FA) negotiations with Park Dong-won in March of last year.
The KIA club held a disciplinary committee and dismissed former general manager Jang in March of last year, and the Korea Baseball Organization (KBO) secretariat requested a related investigation from the prosecution in April of last year.
The prosecution began its investigation in earnest in November last year by seizing and searching former Director Jang's residence.
During this process, the prosecution reportedly detected additional criminal charges in addition to former leader Jang's demand for kickbacks against Park Dong-won. As for former coach Kim, he is said to have discovered allegations against Bae Lim Soo-jae, which had nothing to do with the player's joining.
The prosecution recently summoned the two people directly and conducted an investigation.
Former coach Kim and former general manager Jang are reportedly suspected of receiving bribes worth around 100 million won and tens of millions of won, respectively, from a coffee company that is a sponsor of the KIA Tigers.
It is known that this company gave money and valuables to former coach Kim on several occasions in order to help conclude a sponsorship agreement with the KIA Tigers.
The day before, KIA terminated the contract with director Kim Jong-guk, who concealed this fact. It is reported that Coach Kim did not inform the team of the request for an arrest warrant during a meeting with the team on the 27th.
This is the first time that an arrest warrant has been requested for a current manager of a professional baseball team on charges of personal corruption, so the baseball world is also paying close attention to whether a warrant will be issued.
