“New York is the mecca of the world” A 77-win pitcher returns to his hometown…
The New York Yankees recruited right-hander Marcus Stroman (33).
MLB.com announced on the 12th (Korean time) that “the Yankees signed a two-year contract worth $37 million (about 48.6 billion won) with Stroman.” It even includes a vesting option that automatically extends the contract if he plays more than 140 innings in 2025, his second season. When the contract period is three years, the total amount will be $55 million (72.3 billion won).
MLB.com noted, “Stroman debuted (in the Major League) with the Toronto Blue Jays in 2014 and has been a consistently above-average starting pitcher throughout his career.” However, considering the fact that he suffered injuries such as inflammation of his right hip last year, he said, “I pitched less than 140 innings for two consecutive seasons,” and added, “In 2022, he missed a month due to inflammation in his right shoulder and missed more than two weeks due to COVID-19.”
Nevertheless, MLB.com said, “Stroman is one of the most durable pitchers. He exceeded 180 innings three times in four seasons from 2016 to 2019. He also exceeded 200 innings in Toronto in 2016 and 2017.”
Stroman was selected by Toronto in the first round of the 2012 rookie draft. After his debut in 2014, he played for 9 seasons until last year. After his Toronto debut, he was traded to the New York Mets in July 2019. He moved to the Chicago Cubs ahead of the 2022 season.
He appeared in a total of 231 games (223 starts), pitched 1,303⅔ innings, and recorded 77 wins, 76 losses, an ERA of 3.65, and 1,091 strikeouts. The 2020 season was skipped due to concerns about the COVID-19 pandemic. He is a two-time All-Star (2019, 2023), a high-level player who won the Gold Glove Award in 2017 with 33 games, 201 innings, 13 wins, 9 losses, and an average ERA of 3.09, and ranked 8th in the Cy Young Award voting.
Stroman, who signed a three-year, $71 million contract with the Cubs, opted out after completing his second season and hit the market. His last season, he appeared in 27 games (25 starts) and went 10-9 with a 3.95 earned run average.
“I love pitching at Yankee Stadium,” Stroma n said. New York is like the Mecca of the world. I like competition. I always liked pitching here (Yankee Stadium). “I didn’t throw it well, but I always enjoyed it,” he said.
