22 years as a professional, 605 games played’ Legendary GK Kim Young-kwang retires

Legend Kim Young-kwang, who played in 605 K-League games, takes off his goalkeeper gloves.

Kim Young-kwang announced his retirement on Instagram on the 6th, saying, "I am leaving a message because there are people who are curious about the news. I have now decided to take off the gloves and am preparing for my second path."

Kim Young-kwang started his professional career with Jeonnam Dragons in 2002 and played for Ulsan HD, Gyeongnam FC, Seoul E-Land and Seongnam FC. He was born in 1983 and was also the oldest player in the K League last year. He guarded goal in the K League for a whopping 22 years, appearing in a total of 605 games. This is the second highest appearance record after Kim Byung-ji's 706 games.

He also appeared in 17 matches for his country. He also participated in the 2004 Athens Olympics and helped the team advance to the quarterfinals.

Kim Young-kwang said, "Since I started playing soccer, I have never wasted a single day or not tried my best. If I had the chance to go back to the past, I wouldn't go back. I have the confidence to go back and work harder than I have done so far. “Because there is none,” he said. “Every day was a battle with myself and it was painful, but every time I achieved the goal I wanted, it was such great happiness. That’s why I have absolutely no regrets even if I take off my gloves right now.”
