Established as the new ‘goods’ of the MZ generation!

For him, a member of the MZ generation (born between 1980 and the mid-2000s), purchasing paper newspapers was an unfamiliar but exciting experience. Ever since he was in elementary school, Mr. Lee, who followed his 'baseball fanatic' father to and from Jamsil Stadium, stood in line and was delighted to receive autographs from Park Yong-taek and Lee Byeong-gyu, became an LG Twins fan.

And Mr. Lee, from 'Ellini', finally achieved one of his dreams before he turned 30. I got to see the LG Twins win the regular season.

For Mr. Lee, born in 1996, winning LG is the first time in his life. LG's previous win was in 1994, 29 years ago. On the 3rd, the last day of the holiday, Soyeon Lee cheered with her father when LG's 2023 regular season win was confirmed. Messages filled with joy poured in in the group chat room where people who were walking together gathered together.

After a brief moment of joy, Mr. Lee hurriedly turned on the computer. Although his salary was not much, he couldn't miss out on the LG Twins victory commemorative goods. But for some reason, even though the salary was not that much, he visited the goods store site to buy a lot of goods, but the club did not sell the winning goods.

An LG official told Sports Seoul on the 4th, “The championship tee, championship hat, commemorative ball, championship emblem wappen, and championship emblem key ring that the players will wear after the end of today’s game are available for sale, but they cannot be released in advance before the players’ ceremony, so the winner has been confirmed. It couldn't be sold right away. “We will sell it both online and offline in line with next week’s home game schedule,” he said.

In the end, Mr. Lee went out in search of a newspaper with the LG championship, which was the 'only' good, displayed on the front page, and only after leaving home 40 minutes earlier than his usual work time and walking over 30 minutes to a convenience store was he able to obtain two copies of the sports newspaper, including his father's. That's why the 'Sports Seoul' newspaper dated October 4th was sold out to the extent that it was difficult to obtain even at the headquarters.

Before the development of the Internet, paper newspapers were the only means of finding out news about the team you supported. However, since the mid-2000s, with the development of smartphones and the ability to read news articles on the Internet without buying newspapers, newspaper subscription rates have declined.

However, due to its 'rarity', young people began to perceive newspapers with their favorite team's winning moments on the front page as a kind of goods. There is a record of winning online or on mobile, but the printed newspaper cannot be replaced by anything else. The vividness of the scene at the time remains intact without being covered by other content. This is also the power of print media.

On November 8 last year, when SSG Landers defeated Kiwoom Heroes in Game 6 of the Korean Series and won the overall championship, the next day, on the 9th, Mr. A (62, male), who runs a convenience store, had a new experience. It is said that young customers in their teens and twenties rushed to buy sports newspapers on the newsstand.

Mr. A said, “Suddenly, more than 30 people came from the morning and swept up the sports newspaper. “There was nothing left, so we couldn’t sell it to those who came later,” he said. “Normally, there are cases where elderly people buy a copy of the newspaper, but there are not many cases where young customers come to buy the newspaper. One customer said he stopped by all the nearby convenience stores. What happened?” he said with wide eyes.

The newspaper, which printed the club's monumental history on paper, became a 'goods' in itself. Once the newspaper of the day is printed, it is not printed again, which creates a desire to collect it. It is a so-called limited edition. At the time, the head of the Incheon deck of Sports Seoul in the Incheon area, where the SSG club is based, said in a phone call with a reporter, “The ‘Sports Seoul’ newspaper published on November 9 in the Incheon area was sold out.”

At the time, our magazine recognized the demand from these fans, and when SSG Landers won the overall championship last year, we held an event where we held a story contest for SSG fans who were unable to purchase the paper and delivered the paper for free to 50 selected people. More than 300 stories were received in our baseball club's common mailbox, and more than half were people in their 20s and 30s. There were several teenagers, including high school seniors.
